Values led FTSE 250 company doing right by their people with outplacement support

With just a few weeks to spare before a significant redundancy exercise, this values-led FTSE 250 company was still determined to do right by their people.

Background

When this values-led FTSE 250 company faced the prospect of a significant redundancy exercise, they knew they wanted to offer Outplacement Support. Having worked with us in the past, they got in touch for a confidential discussion about their plans ahead of the company-wide announcement scheduled for just a few weeks’ time.

I listened to their challenges and learned more about the roles impacted. We discussed the various Outplacement Support options available and which might work best. Within 24 hours, I had prepared a fully costed proposal and detailed timing plan covering the operational sites and office-based colleagues.

Outplacement services tailored to the client’s needs

I quickly assembled a team of associate career coaches and CV writers, fully briefing them on the company and the background of the restructure.

Over two months and across 5 UK factories, we delivered a series of on-site, half-day Outplacement Support workshops in small groups. We also offered one-to-one career coaching sessions where people could check in and get our support for whatever was on their minds.

Our team of CV writers held one-to-one sessions, gathering the information needed to update or, in some cases, create from scratch, a CV.. These were then written up and emailed to everyone within seven working days.

Online group workshops for office-based colleagues followed, as well as individual support for several senior leaders.

Weekly check-ins with the project coordinator ensured everything was on track and we were able to flex where needed.

Key benefits of the outplacement services provided

  • Impacted employees at all levels of the business felt valued. The factory colleagues truly appreciated the one-to-one support and attention, recognising it’s not offered by all organisations.

  • Some employees had been with the company for 40+ years and had never had to apply for a job before. With our coaching, individuals were able to apply for jobs digitally for the first time. I supported one colleague to apply for a job using his phone –  a huge step for him as he didn’t have anyone else to help him.

  • Those who felt distressed were supported in trying to come to terms with the situation. We offered space for them to express themselves and think about their next steps.

  • Our practical job search advice gave hope and confidence to individuals, equipping them to secure their next role.

  • The company’s reputation as a business that cares about its people was protected. The remaining employees saw their colleagues and friends were cared for, which boosted their morale. And those who left felt they were treated with respect and would consider returning should the opportunity arise.

A successful outcome thanks to outplacement services

This was a really rewarding project. I witnessed firsthand how offering Outplacement Support was truly in line with the values of this organisation. They cared about their people right up until the end and that was very much appreciated by those who were leaving. This company knew that when the market changed, they would likely need to recruit again. By treating people with respect during their redundancy, there’s an increased likelihood they’ll consider returning in the future.

Some of our great feedback included the project coordinator mentioning it was ‘like working with family,’ and site managers commenting on how down-to-earth we all were and how we fitted in straightaway.
