Redundancy outplacement support enables a 100-year-old business to preserve the culture it has worked so hard to create

Our client, a family-run business with a history spanning 100 years, was at a crossroads. They were looking at possible job cuts for the first time. It was tough, especially since many had worked there their whole adult lives, with family by their side.

Partnering with HR to support everyone throughout the redundancy process

The HR Director made a smart call from the outset: they committed to outplacement support from the off and we partnered with the HR team right from the announcement through to the last of the redundancies and beyond.  We were there every step of the way to ensure support was in place for both those directly affected by redundancies and for colleagues who remained in the business.

Background: Redundancy outplacement support services needed for lifelong employees

The HR Director approached us early on in the planning process when they were contemplating redundancies.  As such an established business with values at their heart they were under no illusion that these redundancies were going to take a toll on the whole team. They knew the redundancies would be tough. Many of the team had been in the business their whole working lives. The HR Director was true to the people-centred approach of the business and knew that Outplacement Support would be needed.

A tailored outplacement programme and support during the consultation period

We arranged a call so we could find out more about their business, their culture, the context for the proposed restructure and to understand the nature of the roles that were going to be impacted.

Having understood their situation and requirements, we proposed a tailored Outplacement Programme.  This included one-to-one support packages tailored to the needs of the individuals, group workshops, and ‘on-demand’ coaching for people to access at any time during the consultation period as a safe space for individuals to work through their thoughts and feelings about the redundancy process.

We had weekly meetings with the HR team to review progress with the consultation, to establish interest in the programmes and to schedule workshops and make referrals for individual support.

The benefits of our outplacement services – during redundancy and beyond

  • Their family values of fairness and respect remained at the heart of the redundancy process.
  • People left with dignity and felt supported throughout the process.
  • Our coaching helped key individuals who remained to make a positive transition into the new organisation model.
  • Those who left were more confident and equipped with the skills and knowledge they needed they were able to find their next role quicker.

Our tailored redundancy outplacement support ensured a positive outcome

Engaging our services and providing Outplacement Support was a fundamental part of this well managed restructure.  The company took difficult decisions and implemented them whilst staying true to their family values.  The positive culture they had worked so hard to create remained intact. Our support helped with the retention of key people after the restructure and those who left felt more positive about the future:

  • “Has been a real eye opener and I know now what I need to evidence in an interview”.
  • “A big thank you – the work and interview preparation we have done has been great”.
  • “I couldn’t have done it without you, I would still be stuck and not in a good place – thank you”.
  • “These sessions were really good and helped to boost my confidence”
